It seems we did pretty well in the Shadowfell session that is up on RPGMP3. I have uploaded a character sheet to go alongside the Tielfling Warlock that I did on audio (as I promised to do it and it did not take too long).

I have been getting some excellent feedback about Geek-A-Saurus and I have just started the process for installing Woopra to have a look at the stats for the site. I love watching little sites growing as word of mouth spreads. I was talking to Jon on email today and saying how, even through we have be piling out recordings for 5 years now, this seems to give me more of a sense of achievement for some reason. It is also nice to get some feedback as it kind of cements the fact that you are actually talking to someone and not just yourself.

I think the pimping of the podcast has begun to start in earnest and with so many contributors and folks on the site helping out we should be able to get the word out pretty quickly. When we decided to do this, we wanted it to be a lot more community built than be the work of just a few hands and we are excited to see what kinds of contributions we might get in future weeks.

Obviously, massive thanks have to go out to Martin and Jon and the rest of the Whartson Hall lot who are sharing the project with Lindsay and myself. They have secured some bloody great interviews and I am in awe at some of them that are yet to come. Also we have Martin to thank for the extremely funk intro music :)

Right - I am off to check Lindsay has not turned into a prune in the bath and to check on the dog.

DnD 4e, Character Creation and Shadowfell

Well we have just finished the first session of Keep on the Shadowfell for Dungeons and Dragons 4e. I have to say that I quite enjoyed it from the DMs chair. There was a lot of leafing through the books to figure out rules and the like but I think it definately has some potential.

Sadly Lindsay had to sit this one out due to a really bad headache, but her character, a relative of the ever popular Feylin Hilltopple was ably NPCed by me and managed to rip through quite a few bad guys without a scratch :)

I have just uploaded the session recording to RPGMP3 and you can download it directly if you want (Keep on the Shadowfell Session 01). Let me know what you think!

I also recorded a quite character generation walkthrough for a Tiefling Warlock as I felt bad that the Shadowfell character creation session ended up bad due to the recorder messing up again. You can download this if you want to listen to me talking about roleplaying characters for half an hour. (DnD 4e Character Creation: Tiefling Warlock).

Lindsay's Mum is coming over to visit so we are skipping the next Thursday session of Shadowfell but should be back to normal play by the following week :) Also playing Rolemaster this Sunday. It is all go in the heady world of gaming here in Texas.

I am heading to bed. My gaming duties are over. If you get a chance head over to Geek-A-Saurus and give the pilot episode of our new podcast a look.

Wishing!

Not written in a while. Then I figured it might be nice to do a little review for you guys. Not sure hoe many of you have picked it up, so here goes.

Presentation

The adventure consists of 2 booklets and 3 double sided maps all contained within a rather nice folder. It all looks very pretty indeed but I stumbled over a small problem when I started to read the booklets. It is warm in Texas, and though I do not sweat a massive, the fact that the booklets have no covers really bothered me. I care for my books well and I am afraid that this is going to end up sticky and useless especially across the back page. Al lit would take is one Mountain Dew spillage and your lovely adventure would be so much paper pulp. For just under $30, I have to say I expected a cover!

The interior of the booklets are colour and shiny. The art is pretty decent and it is clear that they are going for a different feel. There is a short introduction to the adventure in the Adventure Book and then we are straight into the encounters. Essentially the adventure has been watered down to a series of set piece encounters with a little bit of linking narrative. If any of you have seen the recent adventures for 3.5 (Expedition to Castle Ravenloft and Demonweb Pits etc) then you will be reasonably familiar with this "new" style of adventure layout. I have to say I am not a fan. I do not like the adventure telling me where my monsters start on the map. It worries me that this is perhaps a step too close to computer gaming where the monster notices nothing until activated by a PC.

The System

The new system is what everyone seems to be wanting to know about and it seems like a huge departure from Dungeons and Dragons of old. Alignment essentially means nothing any more (not a bad thing in my opinion), gone is spell memorisation and spells per day, and skills have been simplified. At first glance it appears that combat may run quicker, assuming the group is aware of all the new rules regarding slides and shifts and things. I have to say I think the combat has been strongly influenced by both MMORGs and the desire to sell minis for the Miniatures Game. Although each character class now has many more options in combat than just stand and swing I think essentially you may fall into a trap where the party just deals with combats in the exactly the same way every time. Bob uses ability A, then Frank uses ability B etc.

I have to admit that the Rules Booklet is very flimsy and thin and is essentially nothing more than the absolute basic rules to allow for the game to be run. I am really waiting to see the grappling rules on the main book. Only then will I have a true idea as to whether or not this is an improvement.

Looking at the pregenned characters at the back of the book they seem to show a strong resembelece to characters from games such as World of Warcraft. They have their resistances (AC and Saving Throws), the Ability Scores are relegated to the back of the sheet, they have a limited and simplified skills list and they have a big bunch of "powers".

These powers can be used "at will", per "encounter" or "daily", essentially giving then a recharge time like a computer game. Looking at the basic characters there seems to be a lot more hit points floating around even at Level 1 than their ever was before and the fact that you do not die until you reach half your hits under zero means that there will be a lot less mortality in this edition. Add on top of this the fact that each character has a number of Healing Surges per day with essentially restore a quarter of their hits and you have some very sturdy character indeed.

Overall

I am currently on two minds about the whole 4e business. I am going to hold off on an overall opinion until I have seen the core rulebooks (which I have preordered) and have run a game (which I am arranging for the day of release and hopefully it will hit the site the same day as well). I want to see how all the changes have affected how the game runs and feels. 3.5 was a huge change from ADnD and I am wondering if this is going to be the same.

From what I have seen so far I think it may well be fun to play, but it may also be very close to just attending a LAN party and playing WoW with your mates. Time will tell!

Post Before Bedtime!

Been pretty busy with stuff over the past couple of days. Lindsay and I have been out entertaining Lindsay's friend from the UK this week - and that was OK. We went down to the Galleria in Houston on Thursday and wandered around looking at stuff we could not afford in all the high end shops.

Thursday night saw the playing of another session of Beyond the Mountains of Madness and finally the game starts to feel like Cthulhu to me. It has taken far too many sessions of messing about and me reading stuff out to get to this point but now we have had explosions, gun play, running, screaming, shoggoths, abductions and all kinds of stuff in the space of 3 hours. This is what Cthulhu is meant to be. Not checking cargo manifests and listening to the Keeper reading endless rubbish about how nice the sky is on your sea voyage. I have to say it was the first session of this adventure that I have truly enjoyed running and I think the players actually enjoyed as well.

Managed to secure a copy of DnD 4e as well, which is great. I was going to go with Will at Enigma's but unfortunately he seems to be having some cash troubles and this means that I am not 100% certain he will be able to get it for me on the day it is released. I had thought of Amazon but then that would likely mean I would not get a copy until the day after it was released. So I have gone with Fat Ogre, a local store that seems to have its shit in order. The guy has said that I will get a call when he gets the books and I can run up and get them - even if they are early and prior to release date. Which is rather excellent I do think.

I have plans to do a session of character creation on the Friday it is released and get that to the site (Patrons and Main Site) along with the first session of Keep on the Shadowfell with any luck. I have primed the players so we are good to go and then hopefully 4e will take over when Cthulhu draws to a close on our regular Thursday night slot and we can have lots of fun playing through the published stuff and seeing how broken things can get.

Tonight I have been playing with setting up a RSS feed for the Patrons Area. I have managed to get it so that it is password protected and so that every Patron can have their own password. This means that if anyone wanders away from the fold I can just remove their access. It also means I can monitor the access for any folks that might have handed their passwords out (though I am sure that's not going to happen as they are all lovely folks). I really really must get the donations block on the site working again. Since I was forced to turn it off due to the bug it caused the donations have once more dried up. I guess you have to be blatant in order to make this sort of thing work. I have not had a new paying advertiser in rather a long time and that makes me sad as well. I think a lot of personally run gaming sites are going to start to feel the bite fairly soon. Things are not looking too great here and I think it will be felt everywhere as people start to watch what they spend their cash on. I just hope we can manage to weather it through to the other side.

Been thinking about the new podcast we are trying to give birth to and I am hoping that Lindasy will agree to give it a crack this week some time. That way we can cut in all the nice bits and pieces I have all prepped for it and see where we end up with a first episode. It is going to stay audio and not be video as video is not the greatest medium for gaming stuff. There is really very little to show people and the filesizes are much more demanding.

I have also managed to get a print out the Labour of Love PDF. All it needs now is for me to correct some typos and ensure the layout is looking good and then it is going online for those who deserve to get it. I will hopefully be uploading it tomorrow and sending out the email to the folks that made the lovely donations way back in the dark and distant past. I feel awful leaving it this long but with such a hectic year and not having the right software to get it all looking pretty it just fell by the wayside a little. Hopefully folks will be pleased with it.

Exciting news for Lindsay yesterday. Singstar for the PS3 is out on the 20th of this month. We will have to get our copy saved at Ned's game store and then we will be singing the night away. I am hoping that it is as good as the PS2 version was as it always cheered Lindsay up when she was feeling down. Poor little babe has been a little under the weather lately and has been getting blue. Hopefully some bad singing on my part will help her out. Can't be any worse than my Rock Band drumming skills.

Been A Little Busy

Some of you might have noticed I have been a little quiet of late. This has been mainly due to me finally being able to relax after finishing my classes for the summer, but also due to the fact that I have been working like a little slave to learn Adobe InDesign.

The main reason I wanted to learn InDesign was to get the Labour of Love PDF that I owe some of the site members sorted. I have not really had time to do the page layout work and to be honest I have not had the software to do it, as Word was totally unsuitable and the free desktop publishing package I downloaded was just useless.

Thankfully the production is almost totally done now after 2 days of constant page setting and layout and it has been proof read by my team of train proof readers (mostly Lindsay). All I have to do is incorporate the changes and then I can get the thing up online and email the link to the folks that need it. I have to say that I am pretty pleased with it and I am glad that I waited for InDesign and gave it the necessary time. It has been a pretty hectic year and I have had most of it written for a while - just had no way to make it look pretty. It has some lovely art from our lovely Site Artist and looks pretty slick if I do say so myself. Hopefully you guys will think so too.

Not sure what I will do with it but I might look at dropping it up on LuLu and seeing if anyone else wants it. Technically it was written as an intro adventure to Tomb of Haggemoth so it might be nice to have printed copy as well.

Been wandering the local outlet mall today with the girl Lindsay knows from her forums. It was OK. I frighten myself with how much I know about women's fashion and things but I guess I was well trained when I was young and my training has since been concreted. Ended up eating out at a Mexican. I love burritos but this one was not the greatest. It was a little dry and heavy.

I have been trying to see if I can manage to get a preorder of 4e sorted so that I can get it as soon as it is released. I have seen the demo adventures and could likely run one of those with the pregens but I have been thinking about it and the rules are still only the quick start ones and I think the best test will be to wait until the actual game comes out. I have Keep on the Shadowfell preordered from Amazon so I think I will likely start by running a group through that (hopefully the day the main rulebooks are released). I think I have managed to secure a preorder - now I just have to persude them to stay open until 12.01am on the previous night so I can buy it from them.

New Releases!

Just a quick one before I shut this down to play Rolemaster. Managed to squeeze some gaming in and hopefully we are now back on track with the regular sessions.

Thursday night saw us playing Call of Cthulhu again. The party finally made it over the Mountains of Madness without a single one of them going too crazy, though there was an incident with Fred (AKA "Ape") which has set up an interesting situation that could lead to the death of the entire party if the correct buttons are pushed. I have to say that I still doubt that the party will see the end of the game as I think the SAN loss early on has been very harsh on a couple of them and even the characters who had decent SAN to start have been worn away quite a bit. This one is up for the Patrons as always and I will be putting something up for the main site some point soon. I think we might be due some more Seabeast or some more Accordlands to try and catch the main site up with the Patrons a wee bit.

Lindsay and I drove up the College Station yesterday to attend a friend's graduation. We had never been to an American graduation before but it was pretty similar to the ones I have attended only much much bigger. Lindsay has some photos over on How To Be A Vintage Goddess if you guys want to look. Sadly there was very little cap throwing at the end, unlike the movies. Before the graduation we went to a place called Snook to have something to eat. We ended up in a place called Steak House. Taking my lead from the name of the place I ordered an extra small sirloin and when it landed it was about as big as my head. We were also introduced to the wonder that is Chicken Fried Bacon. Essentially it is a heart attack on a plate with white pepper gravy. The steak, however, was lovely and extremely inexpensive, though I would worry about ordering the extra large and you might be able to live under it.

The graduation was great. Colin is a roleplayer and had some gaming buddies attending and we got to chat about games and the like, which was nice. Lindsay and I are trying to attract him down here for a one off or two sometime in the near future. I have some great indie games that really need an airing.

So, currently I am sat monitoring the activities of Ruby the pupster while Lindsay takes a shower. We are playing Rolemaster at 3pm today to try and not miss a session as it is US Mother's Day tomorrow. I am not sure what I will do with the party as yet. I think it depends on whether they decide to head to the bandits lair or drive on to Lethys. If they go to Lethys I think I might introduce the seeds of the Grand Campaign and see if they bite. I am not planning on running it as a linear game. I am hoping to get them embroiled in many a side plot along the way. If things go well today we might get a double session in, but we also may not. Either way it should be pretty decent. I love running Rolemaster, I think it is such a natural system to play. It helps that I have a decent handle on the rules and am confident enough to make changes as I need as we go along.

I think the party still need introducing to combat with a monster and combat against a caster and then they might actually be good to go with regards to Rolemaster. Obviously I could then drop in all kinds of optional rules but that would just be mean! Right, I am off to boil the kettle and look at getting the room set up for this afternoon and maybe setting off an audio to process.

Slack Again :)

Ooops! Now its Tuesday! Managed to get down to class yesterday evening and hand in my Digital Video project. I was one of four that actually had it to a stage where it could be presented. Seems a bit sad that I worked myself to death to get it done in time, even though I was sick, and some of the other did not really bother. My lecturer seemed to really like it and acknowledged the amount of work that had gone into it. His only criticism was that he liked the backing music and would have liked it to be louder in the sections where I was not speaking (but that is a pretty easy fix all in all).

I have to say I am glad everything is handed in this semester. For some reason there seems to have been a lot of work all the time. I think it was mostly due to my Web Graphics class which gave me a little bit of work every week. It has not really quite sunk in that I am free and on summer break at last. I have not let my mind wander too far forward of late, trying to stay focused more on what was going on just ahead.

Now I can look and see what we can manage to get done. I have been thinking that it might be good to get the new project up and on its feet. I have a website just sat waiting for some content to fill it and we have some great plans. Might see if we can manage something this week (or weekend) as it appears that Rolemaster will not manage an outing even though most folks are free Saturday. Goggles, poor lad, is pulling a 3 shifter and working all the way from Friday up to Noon on Saturday, so he is not going to be any good to anyone. And we have cancelled Sunday due to Mother's Day. At least we should be able to pick up Beyond the Mountains of Madness this Thursday and see if it has any legs. I think this next session will be the teller to see if the party can make it to the plot or go mad trying to find it.

Woke up at 5.10am this morning coughing my lungs up. Decided it was probably nicer if I got up and went and died quietly away from poor Lindsay. Sadly I managed to wake the dog and she and I spent some time dozing on the sofa in my study and trying not to disturb each other. She is a lovely little dog and we ended up sitting in the Games Room watching Dune while everyone else started to wake up!

I am also pleased to say that Lindsay has managed to fix the skirt she was making. The zip broke on her after she had spent two days making it and she was starting to lose heart a bit but we managed to find a zipper repair kit in the local craft store and it has all the pieces she needs so she is just pliering the stops on now and hopefully things will be good. She is also getting to be a rather good driver even if the majority fo Texas can't drive for toffee.

Just wrapped up my wiki work for my Web Graphics class and am thinking that relaxing with a nice cup of tea is whats in order. I have to blame Thing, but every time I make a cup I think of this bloody video he posted up on RPGMP3 called Cup of Brown Joy. Its rather funny!

So Much For The Roll!

Well, I managed to blog for two days in a row there and could not manage three. Yesterday was pretty hectic. We ended up wrestling with a gazebo in the back garden and by the time we were finished Lindsay was almost out of hit points and I was totally out of spells. Still it looks pretty nice and will provide some shade in the summer and the nice nets will keep the biting evil out and away from poor Lindsay.

Other than that I had to burn my Digital Video class work to DVD. I figured it would take two. One for the product in AVI format and another for the raw files and Premiere Pro project files I had used but it ended up taking three. I guess I did more work than I thought. Lets hope he never has to make any alterations to the original. I have to say I thought it was pretty interesting when I first started. It is a video on the history of superheroes and how looking at their development could be used as a springboard for class discussions in history or social studies. Now I have finished it I am sick of the sight of it. I had to put it down and stop fiddling with it otherwise I was going to go quite quite mad!

If you would like to share in the madness you can watch it up on my portfolio - History And Superheroes - Let me know what you think!

In addition to that; while Lindsay was constructing a skirt from a fabric called Vertigo, that is extremely well named; I had a little play with Adobe After Effects. I had been putting off playing with it until my videos were finished otherwise it was going to cause me all kinds of issues as I tried to add lovely motion effects to my video footage. My first foray into the world of video special effects was a great tutorial I found online over at VideoCopilot and it was to do a Demon Face Transformation. I needed a victim for my experiments to make the appropriate actions to the camera, and as Lindsay was busy I picked on my poor long suffering mother. I am quite happy with the results as a first attempt to use something and you can watch the final product on my portfolio - Demon Face Transformation - Its pretty scary!

I also had time yesterday to process and upload another session of Pirates of the Spanish Maine to the site and update the Community Podcast. I love the Whartson Hall lot. Everything they do is so bloody funny. They are great folks and the couple of times we have met them they have been brilliant. Just waiting for them to come on out to visit us and then we can play something out here! Pirates of the Spanish Maine is drawing to a close but I have plenty of Whartson Hall stuff left in my bag of tricks and I think we might see Traveller raising its head in a week or so once Pirates is in the bag.

It has decided to rain today (which is always great when I am driving down the highway to class) and it is a bit miserable. Thankfully, as it is my last class before the summer there could be a tornado, ice storm and earthquake all at once and I would still be happy! Wooooo!

Pretty Slow Day!

Early start for me this morning as I had to head into campus (a 30 mile drive) to show off my web graphics portfolio for my course. The Web Graphics class has been OK, but it has been using Adobe ImageReady when it really should have been using Fireworks. I guess we can't have everything and they are pretty similar. Some of the stuff I had to produce was a little embarrassingly simple but I persevered and now I am done.

Home about noon to a naughty dog and a Lindsay that had gone over on her ankle. Went to Ruby Tuesdays for lunch and had a pretty decent burger and then drove around for 3 hours looking for a gazebo for the back garden. I know I should really just hunt myself one down and kill it but the stores have so much more choice than the ones you can find in the wild.

Fell asleep with Lindsay and the dog when we got back, then felt rubbish when we woke up. Uploaded a couple of audio files from the huge stockpile of Warlords of the Accordlands that I have still to release. I have reduced the quality to reduce the filesize but I defy anyone to actually notice any difference. Hopefully this will go a long way to stopping the spikes in the bandwidth that we have been seeing. Perhaps if I only release a couple of file at a time and spread them out each day we can more evenly distribute the downloads.

Added the old Donations Block back on the site and was pleased to see 3 donations already. My users are lovely people. That donations block was pretty decent last time we used it and I really should have just stuck with it but I was trying to clean things up a little. I never expected that the donations would basically drop off to nothing, but I guess out of sight out of mind. I am going to monitor things and see what happens.

On the game front we are not doing too well. One of the players has pulled out of Mothers Day (11th) so thats another 2 weeks without Rolemaster. We are going to be picking up Beyond the Mountains of Madness again this Thursday but I do not think they are going to see the end of it the way the sanity is ebbing away. Might have to do a little fudging and even then I doubt they will survive far. At least it will free up the Thursday slot to give 4e a shot when it comes out. As a side note, does anyone know where I could get a copy that can guarantee delivery for the date of release?

Just sat typing this while Lindsay is sewing a skirt. She is so bloody good at the sewing lark now. I am sure you all need to check out her Etsy Store and buy lots of her things. Thinking that I have a little bit of Wiki to write but I am going t do it tomorrow and I have to get my Superheroes And History video burned to DVD for Monday along with all the working files (so that's going to be fun). Tomorrow is a good day for all that I think. Might just head off and forage a snack from somewhere, make a nice cup of tea and retire early.

Here We Go Again!

So, first post on version 2 of RPGMP3 And Me!

Hal a pretty slow day. Been to Lindsay's sewing school and taught Lindsay's sewing teacher's husband how to use Photoshop. He picked it up pretty quickly. Got back here to some wrangling with the hosts for RPGMP3. We appear to be getting charged as a result of burstable billing. Essentially, when I post something to the site, I get a download spike (expected and not unusual), but even though I have 1.5TB of bandwidth per month and am only using about 650 - 700GB we are spiking over the average of 4.5MBits / second too often so they are charging me as if we were using much more bandwidth than we are.

I am currently looking into options like throttling the download speeds when things start to spike to keep the costs down. I always said that if the site could not sustain itself with donations and Patronships then I would take it down. I don't want to take it down. I love doing it. I think people get a lot out of it, but it is becoming something of a behemoth! Which I guess is kind of a good thing in a way, but it makes it costly to keep there.

Another option, that the host is keen on, is for me to purchase additional bandwidth to become essentially unmetered. This would sadly cost an additional $115 per month on top of the $150 we are already paying and I pretty sure thats not going to happen unless I managed to secure some bloody reliable advertising or double my Patronage.

To get the ball rolling again I have reinstalled the Donations Block that we used to have that tracks the donations people make and sets up a target. We lost a lot of donations when I took that down. It feels like begging to me but I guess if the site is going to stay supported I am going to have to do a little bit of that.

I have some great plans for expanding things. I have a whole new podcast planned and it even has its own website which is ready to receive it, but I have not had the time to get it recorded yet due to far too much coursework for my masters and a load of other things. I have put the equipment together a few times and then just not got round to doing it. Nerves I guess! Not really too confident with the whole presentation thing!

We have also been having some issues with getting the regular games running. Lots of family things from all sides and my work have put Beyond the Mountains of Madness on the back burner for 3 weeks and it looks like Rolemaster might be sitting it out again due to Mother's Day (that will make a month off). I have to say out of the two I am enjoying Rolemaster a whole lot more. I am hoping to finish Cthulhu (one way or another) before DnD 4e is released so that I can get a recording of that up as soon as possible after the release. I guess time will tell - if we ever manage to get another game in.

I want to push for them to play ever Sunday on RM (but some of them play a RIFTS game on the alternate weeks I think). I might see if we can squeeze RM in prior to the RIFTS game rather than have one week off give us such a huge time gap. We already play Call of Cthulhu every Thursday but we have missed a lot of time recently. I think the game is a little slow and it is quite badly edited making it stumble along. Sadly it looks like two out of the four characters are going to go bat shit crazy before they even really see the main plot. I guess that's an issue with starting with a low SAN in Cthulhu. I suspect if things go as I expect I might end up with a few dead and the rest fleeing the Antarctic before they have even flown across the mountains. It would be a shame but who could blame them?

I have summer coming up and hopefully that means some free time to see if I can slap the site around a little. I would love to do a redesign but I would need some help in order to take it on. A few people have offered a little assistance and I have a pretty solid plan for what I want to do with it but it is just finding the time to get it all done and then implementing it all.
